Jonathan Calugi
Minimal and essential lines from which the most varied silhouettes take shape.
All enclosed by a single line.
No school, many passions
Drawing has always been a liberating act for him, through which he transfers his intricate but understandable imagery onto paper. In each of his representations Jonathan seems to take care of those simple lines and colours that have accompanied him since childhood and that make him a tireless seeker of new forms for common images.
His style is characterised by a process that goes from confusion to simplification and back to confusion.
Jonathan’s other great passion is electronic music: with his group ‘A Smile for Timbuktu’ he has also created installations and illustrations of various kinds.
The ‘Less the more’ that made around the world
It was his recognisable and unique style that in 2010 led to his selection by Print Magazine as one of the 20 New Visual Artists Under 30 and by the Art Director Club of New York as one of the 50 Young Guns under 30.
In 2012, his illustrations immediately struck a chord with singer-songwriter Cesare Cremonini, for whom he created the cover for the album ‘La teoria dei colori’.
In 2017, it was Apple who fell in love with his style, asking him to demonstrate the sensitivity of its screens during WWDC with a ‘live drawing’.
His portfolio also includes numerous other collaborations with well-known brands such as De Longhi, Airbnb, Apple, Sony, Google, Facebook, Logitech, The New York Times and many others.
In addition to his work as an illustrator, Jonathan continues to pursue his artistic research by exhibiting his works in Italy and abroad.
