Luca Barcellona

He is able to blend the manual skills of an ancient art like calligraphy,
with the languages and tools of the digital era.

Bio

He arrived on the scene in 1999, after training as a graphic designer and writer. Since then he has been involved in every field of lettering, from type design to letterpress, and letters have become the main element of his creations.

Today he works as a freelance graphic designer and calligrapher, with the aim of bringing together the manual skills of the ancient art of writing with digital age languages and tools.
Luca Barcellona is inspiring new generations of calligraphy enthusiasts with this blend of classical styling and the world of graffiti writing.

As he likes to repeat, for him writing is above all a way to recover forms of expression from the past, restoring a human dimension to the hectic rhythms of daily life.

Experience

His lettering is on display in solo and group exhibitions at various European galleries, as well as being included in the permanent collections of the Akademie der Kunst in Berlin and the Harrison Collection at the San Francisco Public Library.

Since 2007 he has been teaching calligraphy at the Italian Calligraphy Association and holding workshops in Canada, the US, Japan and Australia.
He has been giving live writing performances since 2003 with the Rebel Ink collective, including theatre performances in 2015, accompanied by pianist Cesare Picco and world karate champion Dario Marchini.

In 2012, Luca Barcellona published his first monograph, “Take Your Pleasure Seriously”, published by Lazy Dog Press of which he is also a shareholder.
